Boston trip in 2008 fall

3. To collect money (part 2)

After I moved to US, I collected and saved spending money for study abroad as per following 3 ways.

1) Part time job on campus (assistant & facilitator at Japanese class)

I worked as an assistant and facilitator in Japanese language class on campus.

1 class (1 hour) is approx 10 USD (1,000 JPY). My school has language class almost everyday (Monday-Thursday), and I worked for 2 classes, so I could save money pretty well:)

Of course I worked legally!

2) Applied for tuition waiver for international student

UWRF had tuition a waiver system, so I applied for it in my 2nd year of study abroad.

It depends on your grade and family’s financial situation, but I was waived about 1/3 of tuition, which was really helpful.

Jeff told me that he applied for it before he went to US, so his tuition was waived from the 1st semester.

I should have done that too!!

3) Received the pension for the disabled & study abroad scholarship in Japan

Although I was in US, my residence certificate still existed in Japan, so I could keep receiving the pension for the disabled.

Also I applied for the scholarship for study abroad from the same organization that I got scholarship for my junior college in Japan.

I have been returning money little by little since I started my job.

That’s all.

By saving money, I could study and graduate in 2 years. Moreover, I really enjoyed shopping and travelling.

I visited 7 cities in US for 2 years!

When I looked back at how I collected money for studied abroad, I realized I could have done because of my disability and my family’s financial situation.

Many people would feel “my life is miserable” if they are in the same situation as mine, but I could take advantage of my situation for making my life much much better!

If I don’t have any disabilities, I would never think about going to study abroad, and couldn’t experience wonderful time in US.

Also I couldn’t meet Jeff either. Therefore I feel so lucky that I cannot walk because I could have the greatest man in the world!!

My story of study abroad preparation ends here.

Thank you for reading all.

Well, I studied for TOEFL before going to US for preparation, but it is not a special topic for Moon Rider (everybody studies TOEFL if they wanna study abroad), so I didn’t write about this in this blog.

At last, my Moon Rider friend visited a study abroad agency before, and asked if she could go to study abroad.

However, the staff said “we cannot arrange a plan for wheelchair user.”

Although each country has a different system, but in US, I think they would not decline an entry due to your disability.

I believe that the agent said so because they cannot take any responsibilities if something happened to my friend etc.

If Moon Rider wanna go to study abroad, it would be better contact the school directly not via an agency.

If you need my help for study abroad, please leave a comment on this post or message me from Contact Us.
