* * * * *

Recently I am often asked for my opinions for environmental or equipment’s universal design in Japan.

I found that I only know about my situation which is a manual wheelchair user who can live independently without any special cares.

There are so many kinds of disabilities and diseases in this world.

If I could get to know about those information more, I would be able to enhance my knowledge with a more comprehensive point of view.

Therefore, I decided to take the universal design coordinator class and to get a universal design certificate, which is operated by Japan Universal Design Research Organization.

I had a 3-hour class and a 50-minute test in one day. In the class, I could also talk about my experience as a moon rider:)

For example,

Teacher: “Do you find any universal designed products or equipments around you?”

Student A: “Multipurpose restroom*.

Not only for wheelchair user, but also mother can change her baby’s diaper in the restroom.

Also some of them have a rest board to change clothes.

It can be used by many people.”

(* multipurpose restroom: It is a big rest room and is designed to be useful to everyone, especially to wheelchair users, parents with babies, ostomate user, and elders.)

Me (Mizuki): “But it is also a problem that the users who really need to use the restroom like me have to wait longer, since it can be used by everyone, even by those people who don’t need it .

Also in many cases, the design of multiple restroom is conducted by non-disabled people only, so it is not practically user friendly.

For example, the mirror is placed too high so I cannot see myself when I sit on wheelchair.

The handrail which is supposed to be helpful, but disrupts me because it was placed in a wrong position.

Most of the multipurpose restrooms are used by both men and women.”

Teacher: “Wheelchair users are feeling that transferring place to place is a difficult task.”

Mizuki (Me): “That’s so true. When I change my job, the accessibility from my home to the office is one of the criteria that I really care about.”

Student B: “Do you think working at home is better?”

Mizuki (Me): “It doesn’t mean that I wanna stay home and work at home because transferring is troublesome.

I love working with and talking to other people face to face.”

Every time I talked about my opinion, everyone looked surprised because they never thought about it. (Other students are not handicapped.)

It was pretty interesting for me too to know about their opinions.   🙂

In the end of the class, the teacher told us a very impressive phrase .

“Handicapped” is created by the environment

Do you think the handicapped feel inconvenient due to their mind and body condition?

Actually that’s wrong.

It’s the environment that is inconvenient, and it makes the handicapped feeling inconvenient.

For instance, my legs situation hasn’t changed for 26 years.

But I don’t really feel “handicapped” when I lived in the US for 2 years.

I could even go on a trip by myself, but I cannot do it in my country, Japan.

This country’s environment makes me handicapped!

The environment is designed and created by all companies/organizations in Japan.

That means if companies/organizations changed, the environment would change too.

They have great power influencing how the environment is built and they can built an environment that makes less handicapped.

I also wanna take actions through my job and volunteer works.

I really wanna go back to the US where I can be free, but I will work in Japan a little longer with this challenging mindset!
