We can overcome any obstacles as long as we are with each other.
“Falling in love is a feeling, but loving someone is a choice.” Jeff said, and Mizuki nodded with smile.
They look like twins who share similar thoughts.
Jeff from Taiwan and Mizuki from Kyoto met in the U.S. where they went to college 8 years ago.
After a long distance relationship across the pacific ocean for 4 years, they finally got married this April.
“Actually, Jeff broke up with me once soon after he went back to Taiwan.” Mizuki said.
“I was so surprised and went to Taiwan to see him.
He told me the long distance was too difficult to manage.
Then we decided to continue this relationship as friends.”
At that time, Jeff actually had other worries hidden in his mind.
He thought “Taiwan’s barrier free infrastructure hasn’t developed enough for wheelchair users.
It’s hard to ask Mizuki to come to Taiwan.
I don’t think I can make her happy in Taiwan.
I should let her go.
I am sure a good person will show up for her soon.”
1 year later, Jeff finished his military service.
Jeff and Mizuki had kept their feelings for each other and decided to be in a long distance relationship again.
In 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred.
The sad news of the earthquake filled all major newspaper deadlines and news channels and completely distracted Jeff to focus on work.
Not long after the earthquake, Jeff decided to move to Japan.
Mizuki shared another story with us.
“When I was hospitalized last spring, he came to see me every single day after his work.
I realized ‘Oh, I don’t think I can have a complete life without him’ We can overcome any obstacles as long as we are with each other.
I can be stronger because I know he is always right next to me.”
