Really? ~Part 1~"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When you look for a job, what kinds of job hunting method do you use? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Japan, one of most common method is going to a human resource agency, called \u201cHello Work\u201d, which is also known as Japanese government&#8217;s Employment Service Center. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nowadays more people have access to internet, which allows job seekers to search enormous open profession positions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Regarding people with disabilities, there are also multiple ways to find a job. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I had gone through the job hunting process three times; right after graduation from college and two career changes after my first job. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Every time when I did job hunting, I tried a new way to seek for a job position. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Personally, I found the best way is approaching a company directly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The worst way is going through an agency, especially those focus on matching jobs with people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Those agencies are private companies and provide career counseling service to people with disabilities for free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here is how doing job hunting through those agencies would be like:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6969\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Moon-Rider-HR-Agency-1-e1458497339666.jpg\" alt=\"Moon Rider HR Agency 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>(1) Casual Interview with Agencies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The clients, which are people with disability, explain what they studied at school, what kind of job skills and experiences they have, and what job they are looking for. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The clients will also go through details of their expectations, including industry they want to work in, positions they want to challenge, salary they want to receive, and other requirements. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I had talked to three agencies.All of them had almost one hour casual meeting with me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some agencies tested my PC skills during the interview, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">(2) Job Matching &#8211; Early Stage<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After the casual interview, the agencies will show some available positions in the agencies\u2019 database to clients. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Popular companies usually receives many applications. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Filtering those applications is one of the agencies\u2019s jobs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Therefore, the agencies select limited number of clients from the applications and send those applications to the companies with the agencies\u2019s recommendation letters based on the information clients provides during the interview in step (1).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">(3) Interview with Companies<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When a company is interested in the applicants, the company will offer interview opportunities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some agencies would go to the company with the clients on the interview day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The agencies would introduce the client to the interviewer and leave the company. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Interview itself goes like a regular interview. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some companies interview applicants only once, and some interview applicants twice or three times before the companies make a decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">(4) Result<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Once the companies decide to hire an applicant, they will inform the agencies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Then agencies will inform the applicant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The support of agencies looks great, but I found common demerits among three agencies that I used. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Those agencies focus on how to quickly match a job vacancy with a person with disabilities then collect the payment from the company. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Therefore, those agencies mainly brings job posts which people with disabilities can be accepted easily. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The agencies take abilities and skills of people with disabilities just for reference. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What people with disabilities want to do for the next job and their preferred conditions are on the back-burner.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6971\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC01255-e1458497499754.jpg\" alt=\"Moon Rider Mizuki\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I have received general education from elementary school and have a bachelor degree from a college in US. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In my first job, I worked with an UK based travel company and negotiated with staffs in London about contract and rate of hotel in English everyday. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The second job was one of the listed manufacturing companies in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> I was doing market research in overseas marketing department. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For my third job, I wanted to work more aggressively. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My interests were planning and implementing projects by using my experience and skills. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At that time, I had four year full-time working experience and my salary was pretty good too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To build a better career, I was looking for a next job with better offers than the current ones. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During my job searching, I found a agency, which supports employment just for people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I was very curious and wondered if the agency has more information and job posts for a better career for people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In fact, all agencies I visited were very kind, but there was a huge gap between my expectation and the service they could offer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6976\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Moon-Rider-HR-Agency-4-e1458499752692.jpg\" alt=\"Moon Rider HR Agency 4\" width=\"234\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The agency stocks a number of job posts for applicants with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However once those job posts are sorted by \u201cwheelchair user (Moon Rider) acceptable\u201d, the number will extremely decrease. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This is because many companies consider their working environments are not accessible for Moon Riders. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The fact is that not all Moon Riders\u00a0need \u201cperfect accessible facilities\u201d at workplace. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Every individual Moon Rider requires a different level of accessibilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, most of the companies think that they need a perfect one because they do not have any experience to work with a Moon Riders\u00a0before. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As a result, available jobs for Moon Riders\u00a0are limited to big companies whose buildings are in newly built and accessible buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6973\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/wheelchair-567809_640-e1458498089483.jpg\" alt=\"Moon Rider Wheelchair\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When the number of job is narrowed down for Moon Rider, positions are limited too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Based on my experience, almost all positions for Moon Rider\u00a0are general admin work mainly in back-office such as human resource or administrative department. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Moon Riders are diverse. Some people have severe disabilities, and some people have less severe disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some people can work full-time, and some people can work only part-time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Because of that situations, it would be easier for companies to arrange accommodations in back-office. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If an applicant in wheelchair wants to work for human resource or administrative department, that\u2019s great. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, for people who are not interested in those departments, they would feel unfair, and think \u201cWhy jobs are so limited because of my disability?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6977\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6977\" style=\"width: 263px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6977 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Moon-Rider-HR-Agency-5-e1458500446540.jpg\" alt=\"Moon Rider HR Agency 5\" width=\"263\" height=\"350\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6977\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ID for persons with disabilities in Japan (Tokyo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The other surprising fact is that I found many companies set very few and low qualifications for job vacancies when they are looking for an employee with disability. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They usually only require the applicant to have an ID for person with disability and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>good telephone matter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some job descriptions do not even require any education background. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are many people with disabilities receive general education and have good working experiences which differentiate the applicants.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I have heard that some companies say \u201cNo one with disabilities apply for a job if we do not lower the requirements.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It might be true, but those requirements are too low and they are discriminative. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Obviously those companies want to hire required number of people with disabilities to meet the quota requirement (*1), instead of looking for abilities and skills of people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The job opportunity gap between applicants with and without disabilities is too big, and it is not fair. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Because of lower quality and equality of job positions for applicants with disabilities, most positions are contracted employment, and salary is not ideal for applicants with people with disabilities who have working experiences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I was very shocked by the limited job opportunities and think how difficult it is for people with disabilities to build a good career path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/2016\/03\/22\/how-human-resource-agency-value-people-with-disabilities-2\/#English\">Continue to Part 2<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Reference:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\">I wrote about the quota system for hiring people with disabilities in Japan before.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/2016\/02\/07\/independent-living2\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/2016\/02\/07\/independent-living2\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have visited human resource agencies when I was looking for a job.
