{"id":8543,"date":"2016-02-03T04:00:42","date_gmt":"2016-02-03T09:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moonrider7.com\/en\/?p=8543"},"modified":"2016-03-29T01:58:04","modified_gmt":"2016-03-29T05:58:04","slug":"quotas-arent-the-best-reason-to-hire-disabled-people-yahoo-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/en\/2016\/02\/03\/quotas-arent-the-best-reason-to-hire-disabled-people-yahoo-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Quotas Aren&#8217;t the Best Reason to Hire Disabled People ~Yahoo Part 2~"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: right;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6495\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/DSC00876-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"DSC00876\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/2016\/02\/02\/apple-accessibility\/\" target=\"_blank\">Part 1<\/a>, I shared a brief history of accessibility from Gary. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In part 2, I would like to focus on employment of people with disabilities, which is my research topic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On Yahoo\u2019s Accessibility Team, there are 4 other employees besides Gary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6483\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6483\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6483 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/DSC00881-1-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"DSC00881\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mizuki and Gary<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gary said,<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe have an individual with a disability on our Accessibility Team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Because we want to do a good job of accessibility, it is very important to have a diverse team.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When I heard his words, I remembered the meeting I had at Google Japan last fall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The diversity manager told me,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cGoole users are diverse. Men, women, elder people, children, people with disabilities etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Therefore employees in the company should be diverse, too, to make sure the services and products are accessible for all users.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I am so impressed how Google Japan views and values people with different background. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At Yahoo, I had the same feeling. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I was impressed because most of the companies in Japan which I contacted or had interviews with for a job treated me in completely opposite ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6485\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/photo-1420745628365-ba93c07cb5ca-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"photo-1420745628365-ba93c07cb5ca\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What matters to most of companies in Japan is the number of employees with disabilities required by National Labour Law, which mandates that they hire employees with disabilities to account for 2% of the total employees in a company if a company has more than 50 employees. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Those companies do not have high expectations on what people with disabilities can do. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Therefore, many companies open positions in only in few departments, usually human resource or administrative departments that are desk work with general tasks, for applicants with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I will not complain if \u201cALL\u201d people with disabilities love to work in those departments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But it never happens because each person has different abilities and interests. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I have never been interested in working in human resources or in an administrative department either because I don\u2019t think I can maximize my skills and experiences in those jobs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Therefore I have negotiated with many companies to give me a chance to work in other positions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Most of the companies, however, gave me the exact same reaction: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe are sorry, but we cannot offer that position to you because you are in wheelchair.\u201d <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the worse cases, some companies even offered me a position at their subsidiary sheltered office where the majority of the employees have a disability. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Well, I am not too proud of myself, but I have a degree from college in the US that many Japanese people don\u2019t. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I pursued higher education for a reason. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The way those companies view applicants with disabilities are completely unfair and outrageous. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These discriminations happened not 20 or 30 years ago but within the 6 years when I was working in Tokyo, one of the most developed cities in the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The equality of employment for people with disabilities needs to be improved in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At last, Gary mentioned the important points that many companies often overlook. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEmployment for people with disables is not simple. Even if a company could hire one easily, it might not work if the company doesn\u2019t see the value of people with disabilities as an employee and also as a part of their business target.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> Progressive companies in hiring people with disabilities include persons with disabilities in their PR or marketing materials, not exclude them as a special group of people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Also, those companies have a well developed human resource policy and see the skills and experiences of applicants, they don\u2019t focus on their disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Finally those companies have internal tools that are accessible to employees with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If internal tools are not accessible, employees with disabilities are not going to be able to do their work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And that would be a real barrier for them.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Japan, most companies\u2019 first priority is getting the necessary number of employees with disabilities to meet the required quota of the law. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, are those companies really ready to hire people with disabilities? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How about their PR and marketing materials? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">HR policy? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Internal tools? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If the inside of those companies do not have proper environments, culture or business strategies to include people with disabilities, employees with disabilities will not have loyalty and will leave those companies sooner rather than later. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Eventually, those companies would need to keep struggling to find enough employees with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Every year, Toyo Keizai Inc. releases the ranking of employment for people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, it is ranked based on employed number of people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I want to know the quality-based ranking which is more important and meaningful. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And then we can finally see a ranking of \u201creal\u201d employment for people with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I really want to see that. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Visiting Yahoo report part 2 focuses on employment for people with disabilities.
