{"id":8550,"date":"2016-01-24T22:00:37","date_gmt":"2016-01-25T03:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moonrider7.com\/en\/?p=8550"},"modified":"2016-03-29T02:03:39","modified_gmt":"2016-03-29T06:03:39","slug":"your-performance-evaluation-is-based-on-your-capacity-not-your-disability-facebook-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/en\/2016\/01\/24\/your-performance-evaluation-is-based-on-your-capacity-not-your-disability-facebook-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Performance Evaluation Is Based on Your Capacity, not Your Disability ~Facebook Part 2~"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Hi, it&#8217;s Mizuki!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In my <a href=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/2016\/01\/22\/facebook-accessibility\/#English\" target=\"_blank\">Facabeek report\u00a0part 1<\/a>, I introduced the issues and improvement for visually impaired users of Facebook. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Part 2, I will write tips related to my research, employment for people with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6346\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6346\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6346 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0932-e1453150427797-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0932\" width=\"300\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0932-e1453150427797-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0932-e1453150427797.jpg 303w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mizuki, Shaomei, Matt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Japan, from April 2016, providing reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities at workplace becomes mandatory. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Companies have to provide reasonable accommodation which employees with disabilities would need to work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Therefore I was curious and asked what kind of reasonable accommodations Matt who is blind receives here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Then\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cYea I do\u2026 but you know what? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The interesting thing is, at Facebook I think all people receive reasonable accommodation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you look around, you will find every single employee set up a desk what they want, the way they want it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some employees use standing desk, and some use a desk by sitting but they can adjust their preferred height.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I was very shocked when Matt replied so, because <strong>I was thinking reasonable accommodation is just for people with disabilities<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is true that people without disabilities also have their preferred working environment to work more comfortable and more productive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> Not to treat employees with disabilities as special, a company provides a working environment for each employee to meet his\/her needs to do the job. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I realized this is an ideal situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6438\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6438\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6438 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_0925-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0925\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6438\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cafeteria @Facebook<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The employees at Facebook come from various different background. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The management team including Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and Sheryl Sandberg, COO considers diversity as a high priority. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">People with disabilities are also included. Also of course, how the company see employees are<strong> \u201cwhat they can do.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe best way to\u00a0describe my experience is that you\u00a0literally are treated the same way as anybody\u00a0else. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The decision to hire you, the\u00a0decision to promote, the\u00a0decision to\u00a0include you in a project none of that is based on <strong>your disabilities<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> It is\u00a0based on <strong>your capability<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, there is another challenge too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since a company treat people with disabilities as equal, they have to have skills and experiences that make them work with others. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some parents who have a child with disabilities don\u2019t know how to help the child to develop his or her ability and often keep the child in their house. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By doing so, the child won\u2019t be able to have experiences which other kids usually do, and the child won\u2019t receive necessary educations either. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Eventually those children themselves will face many difficulties in the future.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Matt said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Japan, people with disabilities are considered as ones the society should protect. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the U.S., however, they are considered as one who can receive general education and work at a general company (not like sheltered workshop etc.) if they can receive necessary accommodation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Moreover the U.S. is often described as meritocracy including people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They can be viewed as equal which means won\u2019t be valued if they don\u2019t have enough abilities as other non-disabled people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I believe Japan\u2019s workplace for people with disabilities is becoming more like the workplaces in the U.S., which is to treat everyone as equal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Then how parents raise their kids with disabilities is getting more important.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Kids\u2019 future will really depend on what kind of education and experiences they class=\"wp-caption-text\">Little Mizuki<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My parents often said to me,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cYour disability is only walking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You can do other things, so you should try by yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you really cannot do, you should ask someone for a help by yourself because you can talk. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And if you get a help, say thank you.\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My parents had told me since I was little, so now I naturally think <strong>\u201cI gotta try by myself first.\u201d<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And my case is not special. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I have some friends with different kinds of disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I realized that persons who challenge new things by themselves and live positively have common points, which include their parents. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Their parents push them hard and encourage them to try everything since they were kids. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Shaomei said, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMatt has excellent skills and experiences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When some system trouble occurred, he quickly found the cause and explained the solutions to other members. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It didn\u2019t take time for him to gain credibility in here. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some people without visually impairment cannot do those works Matt easily does. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After he joined the team, things are much better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6441\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/photo-1449157291145-7efd050a4d0e-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"photo-1449157291145-7efd050a4d0e\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Japan, employers focus more on <strong>\u201cdisability\u201d<\/strong> when hiring and positioning people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Moreover some employees with disabilities would not be able to get as same opportunities as other employees without disabilities such as training, business trip or promotion, because the employers think they cannot do it due to their disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Those employers don\u2019t really see people with disabilities as a person who can do things, but as person who cannot do things. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Those employers hire people with disabilities in a way they can feel safer and manage easily. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Personally, an employer could receive a good return by positioning people with disabilities at places where they are interested in and can maximize their abilities, I think. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Even when hiring people with disabilities, it still costs for an interview, registering as an employee, paying monthly salary\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">but if people with disabilities cannot receive necessary accommodations or are positioned to somewhere completely not related to their interests, they will leave soon with high possibility. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So it will be waste of money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you try to hire people with disabilities, please look at them as persons and what experience and skills they have. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Then please think how you can create an working environment for them to express their abilities you will also be one of the beneficiaries. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Everybody wins.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my report of Facebook visit part 2, I am sharing the working
