It is for students with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">EOIRS is for staff and faculty with disabilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> The reason why those offices are separated is because of the difference each office need to follow in ADA. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">EOIRS handles ADA related to title 1 which is employment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">ODS is more under title 3, Public Accommodations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I had an opportunity to interview Dana Butler (Leaves and Disabilities Accommodation Coordinator) and Aaron Hodukavich (the Director and ADA\/503\/504 Coordinator).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-145\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/8f859-dana_mr7-300x220.jpeg\" alt=\"8f859-dana_mr7\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/8f859-dana_mr7-300x220.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/8f859-dana_mr7-768x563.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/8f859-dana_mr7-1024x751.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/8f859-dana_mr7-1200x880.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/8f859-dana_mr7.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dana came from HR background. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She had handled a number of things including disability benefits and accommodations for people coming back from disability. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since\u00a0 EOIRS was separated from HR, Dana has been working at the current position. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She handles\u00a0workplace\u00a0accommodations as well as disability benefits for employees and faculties. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She also handles family\u00a0medical leave act and the long term disability benefit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Aaron had worked for a non-profit organization for people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Through site visits, he found issues that the working environment for people with disabilities, for instance the workers are segregated in\u00a0doing\u00a0a very simple tasks and often getting paid very little wages for the work etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He went to a law school and got more\u00a0involved disability advocacy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now he works as an ADA\u00a0coordinator and coordinates the universities compliance with the ADA and all the various laws and regulations regarding disability.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-197\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/fec48-95cdfeef-300x154.jpeg\" alt=\"fec48-95cdfeef\" width=\"300\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/fec48-95cdfeef-300x154.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/fec48-95cdfeef-768x394.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/fec48-95cdfeef-1024x525.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/fec48-95cdfeef-1200x616.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/fec48-95cdfeef.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All reasonable accommodations are arranged only when a faculty him\/herself discloses the disability and ask what he\/she needs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Japan, when we, people with disabilities, start working, we submit a copy of ID for person with disability to the employer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After that, the employer would ask what the reasonable accommodations are for us. So this process is totally different in US and Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Furthermore, in many employment situations in Japan, enough reasonable accommodation would not be provided due to the lack of budget. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Syracuse University, individual department that the employees with disabilities works would pay for that accommodation from their budget. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If the departments do not have enough budget then it goes up to either their school or the college or the broader department. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It has never happened a case that the university has denied accommodation based on because cost too much to comply with ADA. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The university is looking at resources of the entire university not just an individual department. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So if individual department doesn&#8217;t have the money to pay for the reasonable accommodations the university needs to find that money elsewhere within the University.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-217\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/04f68-dsc00510-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"04f68-dsc00510\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/04f68-dsc00510-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/04f68-dsc00510-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/04f68-dsc00510-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/04f68-dsc00510-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/04f68-dsc00510.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dana and Aaron said,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ideal society for people with disabilities would be one with the least amount barriers possible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By using principles of universal design, we can create spaces and policies that lessen the need for people to have to request individual accommodations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An environment which is the most accessible for the most amount of people, the less number of people that actually have to work with the office to request individual accommodations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Community and space where people access freely without the accommodations and not having barriers are really important.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Equal Opportunity, Inclusion and Resolution Services (EOIRS) is a place which provides reasonable accommodations for staff and faculty with disabilities who work at Syracuse University.
