It\u2019s Jeff today.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today I want to share a story of how Mizuki and I see one thing so differently.<\/span><\/p>\n

I would like to share one of those stories with you today.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Episode 1 – Taking a Wheelchair Friendly Escalator<\/span><\/h5>\n

Tokyo is a big old city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its public transportation is well developed and capable to hold 37 million ridership per day. *1<\/span><\/p>\n

However, not all stations are equipped with elevators. <\/span><\/p>\n

Those stations without elevators are usually equipped with wheelchair lift or wheelchair accessible escalator.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mizuki doesn\u2019t like to use wheelchair lift or wheelchair accessible escalator.<\/span><\/p>\n

I thought it was because other passengers cannot use the escalator or stairs when those mobility aids are in operation.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One time we were at Iidabashi station, using a wheelchair accessible escalator. <\/span><\/p>\n

The train staffs stopped the escalator to prepare it to be accessible for wheelchair. <\/span><\/p>\n

As results, the other passengers has to take a different route. <\/span><\/p>\n

They don\u2019t look too happy about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

As usual, we received quite a lot of attention. People were looking at us.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mizuki was playing with her phone and I was wondering what is the first thing I should say to make this awkward situation better.<\/span><\/p>\n

When we finally reached the platform, I said <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cit was not as bad as I thought.<\/p>\n

People were looking at us but they soon look away. <\/span><\/p>\n

They don\u2019t seem care too much.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201coh yeah?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

said Mizuki while keep on playing her phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

She looked she doesn\u2019t care so I asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI thought you don\u2019t like to take those wheelchair friendly escalators\u2026..\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

\u201cNo, I don\u2019t.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She replied and kept on playing with her phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is that?<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you mind other people looking at you while you were on the escalator but they had to take stairs?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I finally asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I don\u2019t mind people looking. <\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t like to take the escalator simply because it is too slow and I have wait for the staff to get it ready.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She replied bluntly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOh..\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I replied.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I suddenly realized that my assumption was completely incorrect.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am glad that I finally asked or I would never know what she really thinks.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am sure that not all wheelchair users think in the way Mizuki thinks but I hope that this experience sharing would give you some ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n

The best way to understand a wheelchair user\u2019s thinking is always ask the person directly.<\/span><\/p>\n
