{"id":8840,"date":"2016-02-25T22:00:55","date_gmt":"2016-02-26T03:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moonrider7.com\/en\/?p=8840"},"modified":"2016-04-30T17:42:18","modified_gmt":"2016-04-30T21:42:18","slug":"misunderstanding-or-discrimination-at-work-and-in-daily-life-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/en\/2016\/02\/25\/misunderstanding-or-discrimination-at-work-and-in-daily-life-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Misunderstanding or Discrimination at Work and in Daily Life? ~Part 2~"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6757\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AbilityForSuccess-300x152.png\" alt=\"AbilityForSuccess\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AbilityForSuccess-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AbilityForSuccess-768x389.png 768w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AbilityForSuccess-600x304.png 600w, https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/AbilityForSuccess.png 838w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Continuously on &#8220;Misunderstanding or Discrimination at Work and in Daily Life?\u201d Ability For Success Online Meeting, <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the previous post, I summarized the Mizuki\u2019s and Annie\u2019s experiences of misunderstanding caused by their disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In this post, I have summarized the experience of discriminations of theirs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6790\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Ability-for-Success-1-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"Ability for Success 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>At Work <\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mizuki said that jobs are not created equally in Japan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As mentioned in her research blogs, Japan adopted a quota system that requires employers to hire persons with disabilities at least 2% of the total employee amount when the total employee amount is more than 50 people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The quota system was first made with a purpose to increase employment rate of persons with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, it appears some employers and companies take the quota system like it is a homework given by\u00a0Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Employers started creating sheltered subsidiaries and low responsibility jobs to hire persons with disabilities so they can hand it their \u201chomework.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When Mizuki did job hunting in Tokyo, she was often told the position she wanted to apply for is not open to persons with disabilities and she was asked to consider to take an office work, which Mizuki does not want to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Another experience of discrimination Mizuki shared was not related to her mobility disability but with her gender. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the companies Mizuki worked with gives female employees lower responsibility tasks and miscellaneous tasks. Mizuki shared an story with us. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Japan, when an employee came back from a business trip or vacation, he or she will bring some candy or cookies bought at the place he or she visited during the trip. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the company Mizuki once worked with, the male employees always leave the candies and cookies to female employees and ask female employees to distribute the souvenirs to everyone in the office or in the team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The male employees think their time is more valuable than female employees so will give miscellaneous tasks to female employees. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That is outrageous to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Annie shared her experience of going to job interviews in Taiwan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She felt limitations when going to interviews and thinks if her able-bodied competitor may outdo her and win the position. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Annie did not give a concrete example so I am not sure exactly what she had experienced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6789\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Ability-for-Success-2-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"Ability for Success 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Daily life <\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Annie said that she had not really experienced discriminations based on her disability in Taiwan after she graduated from junior high school. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Before she turned 15, her young peer, who did not know much about her mobility impairment at the time, called her names. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That was very uncomfortable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mizuki said that she feels she is discriminated when going to movies and concert. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When we go to movies or go to a concert, we usually do not get to choose where we want to sit due to lack of accessibility. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We sometimes have to sit on the first few rows and look up to the large screen above us for 2 hours. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Persons with disabilities IDs can have a discount of 50% off when purchasing a movie ticket. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, Mizuki and I often say that we are willing to pay 100% of the ticket price, please improve the accessibility. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sometimes I wonder if the 50% off discount gives movie theater owners a &#8220;moral license&#8221; to NOT to improve the accessibility?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mizuki has shared her thoughts in the following articles about accessibility of movie theater in Japan and U.S.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/2013\/11\/06\/%E6%98%A0%E7%94%BB%E9%A4%A8%E3%81%AE%E8%BB%8A%E3%82%A4%E3%82%B9%E5%B8%AD-moon-riders-seat-in-movie-theater\/\" target=\"_blank\">Moon Rider\u2019s Seat in Movie Theater<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/2015\/10\/30\/%E3%82%A2%E3%83%A1%E3%83%AA%E3%82%AB%E3%81%AE%E6%98%A0%E7%94%BB%E9%A4%A8%E3%81%AF%E8%BB%8A%E3%82%A4%E3%82%B9%E5%B8%AD%E3%81%8C%E3%83%99%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88%E3%83%9D%E3%82%B8%E3%82%B7%E3%83%A7%E3%83%B3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wheelchair Seat Is Located on The Best Location at Movie Theaters in the U.S.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Thank you very much for reading this summary of our first Ability for Success online event in 2016. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We are hosting our second one on 20-Mar-2016 (JST Time). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The topic is Society and Disability? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Future of Social Win-Win Strategy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We are looking forward to more participants to take about abilities and disabilities with us. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/online-events-application\/\" target=\"_blank\">Please check here for more information and reserve your spot for free!<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Thank you very much for reading! <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Continuously on the report of \u201cAbility for Success\u201d held on 21 Feb in 2016.
