in American Sign Language (ASL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After the Access Alliance meeting at Starbucks Headquarters, I had an opportunity to talk with Ms. Marthalee Galeota who is a manager, Equal Opportunity Initiatives and is also a nationally certified American Sign Language interpreter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Marthalee went to an elementary school that included many children with disabilities. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of Marthalee\u2019s best friends had a sister with Down Syndrome. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To Marthalee, people with disabilities were always part of her daily life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, when Marthalee grew older, she found out how people with disabilities were treated unfairly and how they are isolated from the society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After she graduated with her Master\u2019s degree in counseling, she started working with people with various disabilities, including developmental disabilities, vision loss, autism, physical disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of her specialties is working with Deaf-Blind people using tactile sign language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At Starbucks, Marthalee is like a professional \u201cbridge.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She serves as an internal consultant sharing her subject matter expertise on new and existing initiatives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If any departments have any questions about hiring people with disabilities, arranging accommodation, making accessible training programs, she provides the resources and shares the possibilities to open doors for people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Marthalee not only dedicates her efforts for employees with disabilities, but also for Starbucks customers with disabilities by improving customer service and accessibilities at store. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For example, Braille and Large Print Menus and Picture Menus are available at all Starbucks stores in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_9046\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9046\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9046 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MoonRider7_Starbucks_BrailleMenu-e1459973439955.jpg\" alt=\"MoonRider7_Starbucks_BrailleMenu\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Braille and Large Print Menus<\/figcaption><\/figure> <figure id=\"attachment_9044\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9044\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9044 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MoonRider7_Starbucks_BrailleMenu_2-e1459973421897.jpg\" alt=\"MoonRider7_Starbucks_BrailleMenu_2\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inside of Braille and Large Print Menus<\/figcaption><\/figure> <figure id=\"attachment_9042\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9042\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9042 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MoonRider7_Starbucks_PictureMenu-e1459973404255.jpg\" alt=\"MoonRider7_Starbucks_PictureMenu\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Picture Menus<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She also created a training module on \u201cCreating a Deaf Friendly Environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She herself is a certified sign language interpreter and manages the interpreter services department for Starbucks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When Deaf employees need an interpreter, they make their request online. Interpreters are provided at the Starbucks Support Center, the stores and roasting plants. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Starbucks has one centralized budget to pay for reasonable disability accommodations which makes for an efficient system.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9048\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9048\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9048 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MoonRider7_Starbucks_BrailleCard_-e1459973476586.jpg\" alt=\"MoonRider7_Starbucks_BrailleCard_\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Braille Starbucks Card!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Marthalee said,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the US, 1 of 5 people have disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We want to create a welcoming environment that is inclusive of people with disabilities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s not about \u201cthem\u201d and \u201cus\u201d \u2013 it\u2019s about \u201call of us.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">People with disabilities bring <\/span><span class=\"s1\">ingenuity, creativity and innovation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We have employees with various disabilities working at Starbucks \u2013 Deaf, legally blind, Tourette\u2019s Syndrome, developmental disability, autism. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Recently, one of their employees with autism, Sam, known as the \u201cdancing barista,\u201d was featured on the Ellen Show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Ellen Meets the Dancing Starbucks Barista<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KaRqqVDAaQo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Increased accessibility is beneficial to everybody, not only people with disabilities \u2013 whether it\u2019s a curb cut, a power door, or captioning \u2013 it helps everyone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Designing with accessibility creates a workplace and stores\u00a0<\/span>where both employees and customers can feel truly welcomed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That effort eventually leads more people to join there as employees or customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This is a brilliant cycle to make everyone happy in the long run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Many companies focus on outcomes for the next year, 5 years, 10 years.
