Tasting Room in Seattle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Before visiting Seattle, I had a chance to talk with Ms. Michelle Collyer, a senior Analyst at Starbucks, over the phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I had not met Michelle in person at that time, but I feel we share similar values about promoting rights for people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Moreover, she was very supportive and kind to organize people that I could meet at Starbucks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I was truly impressed by her wide network, and really appreciated her strong support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9121\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9121\" style=\"width: 513px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9121 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/DSC01756-e1460164213879.jpg\" alt=\"MoonRider7_Starbucks_MichelleCollyer\" width=\"513\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I could meet Michelle again at CSUN in San Diego last month!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the people whom Michelle introduced me at Starbucks was Ms. Jessica Rafuse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She is manager within the Equal Employment Opportunity team at Starbucks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jessica has muscular dystrophy and started using a wheelchair when she was a college student. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During college, she even studied abroad in Spain where was not as accessible as the US is for wheelchair user.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9123\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9123\" style=\"width: 505px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9123 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MoonRider7_Starbucks_JesscaRafuse-e1460164255146.jpg\" alt=\"MoonRider7_Starbucks_JesscaRafuse\" width=\"505\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jessica and Mizuki at Starbucks Headquarters in Seattle!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThat was 14 years ago, but living in Spain was a life changing experience for me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I felt a sense of accomplishment that served as a foundation throughout my life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We have to remove barriers that prevent people with disabilities from developing that sense of accomplishment and experiencing their own success.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jessica\u2019s experiences in Spain inspired her to attend Law School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After she finished her law degree and became an attorney, she worked as an Investigator and Administrative Judge for the Federal agency, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) which is in charge of enforcing federal non-discrimination laws in the workplace. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Through the job, she got more interested in understanding the employers\u2019 perspective. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2013, she started working at Starbucks in affirmative action and non-discrimination. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2014, Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act was updated to include a 7% hiring goal and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>7% utilization goal for people with disabilities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 (<\/span>*1) <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jessica and her team<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>track Starbucks employment<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>of minorities, women, veterans, and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>people with disabilities, and builds employment strategies for hiring people with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9125 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_1682-e1460164269737.jpg\" alt=\"MoonRider7_Starbucks_Headquarters\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">To empower employment for people with disabilities, Jessica works with Starbucks business units to develop individualized hiring strategies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the hiring strategies is the training academy within<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Starbuck\u2019s supply chain. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At Starbucks manufacturing and distribution plants in Nevada and York,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Starbucks offers a 6-week training academy just for people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The trainees learn corporate culture and how to be a manufacturing or distribution employee, including soft skills such as preparation for interviews too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The trainees have 2 weeks of hands-on work in the plant. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Once they graduate from the program, they may be offered a job at Starbucks or<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>use the certification as a resume-builder for employment at other manufacturing or distribution plants in the area.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jessica said, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;We began by asking managers about their goals for hiring. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Then we noticed that everyone shared the same goal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They wanted to hire the very best person for the job. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So we started looking at a way to show that someone with a disability<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>might already be the very best person for the job. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We asked employees with disabilities, <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u201cWhat are<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>your strengths? What are your assets? What are you really\u00a0good at?\u201d<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">People shared stories about innovation, communication, and other skills that they honed because<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>of their disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We saw that tapping into this often underutilized pool of qualified candidates was good for business too.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For example, some people\u00a0 with diabetes test their blood sugar every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">They may plan ahead what meals to eat during a day, what medical supplies to pack, and what to do in case of an emergency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Every day, they are practicing\u00a0 project management skills that are a huge asset to the workplace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I would make an argument that someone with diabetes might actually be the best project manager you can hire.\u00a0 \u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">People with and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>disabilities have skills and assets that they contribute to the workplace. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, like Jessica said, some people with disabilities have developed<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>unique skills as a result of navigating the world through the disability perspective.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is because people with disabilities see, hear, and move differently. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Because of that, people with disabilities are unconsciously building their skills through having disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This was a new finding to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9137\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9137\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9137 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MoonRider7_Wheelchair.jpg\" alt=\"MoonRider7_Wheelchair\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by lekkyjustdoit\/FreeDigitalPhotos.net<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Japanese employment market, one of the serious issues is that many companies have low expectations to people with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jessica said earlier \u201cThey want to hire the very best person for the job\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I believe Japanese employers think exactly same way too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However I wonder when Japanese employers think about \u201cthe very best person\u201d, would they ever consider people with disabilities may be one of the very best person? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unfortunately, people with disabilities are unconsciously removed from \u201cthe very best person\u201d from the beginning, aren\u2019t they?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9131\" src=\"https:\/\/moonrider7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_1688-e1460167407992.jpg\" alt=\"MoonRider7_Mizuki_Starbucks_Headquarters\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By visiting Starbucks and meeting impressive people, I realized the strength of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I found that Starbucks is viewing talents of people and aiming to maximize their abilities at what they want to do, not what employers want them to do. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This whole concept make Starbucks stronger and more attractive to people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lastly I will share the message from Howard Schultz CEO. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This really mirrors Starbucks\u2019s value.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">We are not in the coffee business serving people, we are in the people business serving coffee.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span class=\"s1\"> &#8211; Howard Schultz CEO<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The end<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">* New Regulations:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.gov\/ofccp\/regs\/compliance\/section503.htm\">http:\/\/www.dol.gov\/ofccp\/regs\/compliance\/section503.htm<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last report of Starbucks Headquarters visit.
