Jeff went out with his friend from Singapore the other day.

I knew he took her to our favorite restaurant near our apartment.

So I asked him,

Me: How was the restaurant?

Jeff: They changed the menu design. They didn’t write menu descriptions, but only dish names and hand drawings of the dishes. So I couldn’t tell what they were.

Me: So…what did you guys eat?

Jeff: I ate pasta. And she ate….something not pasta.Me: hahahahaha there are so many food not pasta!!

Jeff: The almost all dish names are Katakana! It takes forever to read Katakana so I choose whatever I could read in Chinese characters (Kanji). .

You might think Katakana is easier to understand for foreigners as it is used for the things from foreign countries.

But for Taiwanese Jeff, Kanji is a lot easier to understand.

Also Katakana actually sounded very differently from its actual English counterpart.

Therefore, even though his English skill is very good, it takes time for him to understand what it means.

The only Katakana word he can recognize the best is his department’s name in the company he served previously.LOL
