『マダム・イン・ニューヨーク』を観ました。
インドに住むごく普通の主婦・シャシは英語が苦手。
旦那や子供達にバカにされながら生活していました。
しかし、姪っ子の結婚式準備のためNYへ渡り、そこで語学学校に通うことになります。
クラスメイトと一緒に英語を学び、最後には家族の前で自分の思いを英語で話せるようになるという内容です。
少しラブストーリーもありドキドキします…p’ω`*q
予告動画には入っていないのですが、初めてシャシがNYのカフェで注文をするシーンがとても印象的です。
店員が何を言っているかわからなくて、食べたいもの・飲みたいものがあっても、発音が下手でうまく伝わらず何回も聞き返されて、他のお客さんは待ちくたびれてイライラしてて…。
私もアメリカで最初の数ヶ月はこんなだったな～と思い出して涙が出てきました。
日本にいると日本語さえ話せれば生活に問題はないですが、この言語は日本でしか公用語として使えないんですよね。
「言葉が通じないから外国に行きたくない」という人も多いこの時代。
それを考えると、自分の意思で海外に出て行く人は本当に勇気がある方だと思います。
この映画と同様、言葉が通じない人に対して厳しい態度をする人もいますが、大変な時こそ支えてくれる人も必ずいます。
いろんな経験をするからこそ、海外に行くとたくさん成長できるのでしょう。
また最近では訪日外国人も増加していますよね。
道で困っていそうな外国人を見かけたことないですか？

完璧に話そうとするから「私には無理無理」と思うかもしれませんが、英語が母国語じゃない国は日本以外もたくさんあります。
下手でも伝えようとする気持ちが大切。
私の父も英語はそんなに話せませんが、
「電車の乗り換えの説明を絵に描いて簡単な英語で説明した」
と以前言っていました。
やり方は色々あります。
お互いに助け合って、外国での時間を楽しみましょう！
I watched “English Vinglish“.
The movie’s narrative revolves around a housewife who enrolls in an English-speaking course to stop her husband and daughter mocking her lack of English skills, and gains self-respect in the process.
It includes a cute love story too.:)
I especially liked the scene when the housewife, Shashi, is ordering at cafe in NY because I had the same experience.
First I couldn’t understand what the casher saying me.
Next I knew what I want to eat/drink, but the casher couldn’t understand what I ordered because my pronunciation was not good.
Other customers waiting in line got angry…
I was just like her during first 2-3 months in US.
I remembered the moment and cried a little bit.
If you are in Japan, you are fine as long as you can speak Japanese.
But Japan is the only country where people speak Japanese as an official language.
Today many Japanese people say “I don’t want to go to a foreign country because of language barrier.”
If I think about those people, I believe that the people decide to go to a foreign country by themselves are so courageous.
Like this movie, some people are harsh to the people who don’t speak their language well, but some are very supportive.
Through various experiences, eventually they can grow up so much.
Nowadays more foreigners are coming to Japan.
Have you seen a foreigner who got lost in the middle of the street?
If you find a foreigner like one again, let’s ask and see what you can do.
You don’t need to try to speak English perfectly because there are many countries where people don’t speak English as an official language like us.
Even if your English skill is not that good, trying to communicate and solve a problem is the most important.
My father also doesn’t speak English well, but he explained that the subway line to take and where to transfer to get the destination by drawing with simple English.
There are many options to communicate with foreigners.
Let’s help each other and enjoy the time in a foreign country.
