このブログで何度もお話したように、私はアメリカのウィスコンシン州に２年間留学していました。
留学までの流れはこんな感じです♪
2007年3月 鹿児島県立短大卒業 (英語英文学専攻)
4月 渡米 → UWRF*にてTOEFLクラス開始
7月 TOEFLで基準スコア達成
9月 UWRFへ３年次編入
2009年5月 UWRFを卒業
(Communication Studies主専攻、International Studies副専攻)

留学には色々な準備が必要ですよね。
英語力は勿論ですが、車イス留学となると、家族の理解・留学先の環境確認・留学資金はどうするか等、健常者の留学より事前準備が大変です。
そこで私が行った事前準備を簡単にご紹介します。
家庭環境、障害の程度、行きたい国によって状況は異なるかと思いますが、少しでも参考になればと思います。
① 家族の理解
留学の決意は高校２年の時。
オーストラリアへの修学旅行がきっかけで、車イスでも自由に生活できる国で”暮らしたい”（”勉強したい”ではありません）と考え、その思いをすぐに母に話しました。
私が障害に負けず、何でもチャレンジしてきたことを一番知っているのは母だったので、留学＋その後海外で生活したいという夢をすぐ理解してくれました。
たぶん、それまで起こした様々な出来事(良い事だけではなく…）から「この子は一度決めたら誰が反対しても絶対行くだろう」と思ったからかも知れません。
しかし、１つ条件がありました。それは「資金は自分で準備しなさい」ということ。
これまでのブログを読んだ方の中には、「車イスでアメリカ留学や旅行をいっぱいしてるけど、きっと親のお金でしょ」と思った方もいると思います。
しかし、留学も旅行も全部自分でお金を貯めて実現させた事です。
私の両親は、私が中学生の時に離婚し、その後は母親が一人で兄、妹、私の３人を育ててくれました。
父親からの資金援助は一切無かったので、兄妹みんな奨学金で高校～大学へ通いました。
私の留学希望について、母が「資金が自分で準備しなさい」と言ったのは、
普通に考えれば、うちの経済状況で留学する余裕は勿論無く、
妹も当時中学生だったのでこれからお金が必要だったからでした。
資金集めについて、高校生の私はあまり深く考えていませんでした。
留学に向けての英語の勉強も特にしていませんでした。
とりあえず留学を母に認めてもらえたので、毎日「私は海外に行くんだ！(人´∀｀).☆.。.:*･ﾟ」というフワフワした目標だけで残りの高校生活を過ごしました。

2007 March Graduated from 2 year junior college in Kagoshima (Japan)
– Major: English and English literature.
April Moved to U.S. and started taking TOEFL class at UWRF*.
July Got enough score on TOEFL test to transfer to UWRF.
Sept. Transferred to UWRF officially (Started from junior year).
2009 May Graduated from UWRF
– Major: Communication Studies, Minor: International Studies
There are many things to prepare before going to study abroad.
And if Moon Rider wanna study abroad, there are much more things to check and prepare than other people.
For example, understanding of family, checking the environment for wheelchair, collecting money for living & studying there etc.
I’m gonna introduce you to things I did before going to U.S.
The situation would be different due to family’s situation, disability level, and a country you want to study in, however I hope some information still can help your dream:)
1. To have understanding of family
I decided to study abroad when I was 17 years old.
I went to Australia in high school field trip and really liked the environment that I could go around freely with my wheelchair.
Therefore, I told my mother right after I came back from Aus. that I want to “live” (not “study”) in a country I could be free.
She knew very well that I have challenged so many things despite my leg’s disability, so understood my dream to study abroad and live in a foreign country after that.
Maybe, because I have done so many things (not only good things…), she might have thought that I would definitely go to a foreign country no matter who stops me.
However, she said just one condition about my dream;
“You need to collect money by yourself if you wanna study abroad.”
Some readers of this blog might have thought like, “Although Mizuki went to study in U.S. and travel a lot, her parents must have paid all money.”
Let me tell you clearly.
I earned and paid all money for study abroad and traveling.
I didn’t and don’t relay on my parents about money although I’m in wheelchair.
Actually my parents have divorced when I was 15 years old.
After that my mother raised us (my older brother, younger sister, and me) up all by herself.
My father couldn’t help us financially, so we all went to go to high school and university by receiving scholarship.
The reasons why my mother gave me the condition for study abroad were that
1) my family didn’t have extra saving for my study abroad
2) my sister was still 12-13 years old then and my mother wanted to use money for her further education.
When I was told that from my mother, I did’t really think deeply about how I can earn money or how much I would need to study abroad etc.
And I didn’t study English seriously for study abroad plan either.
As I just got understanding from my mother, I spent the rest of my high school life with thinking about ambiguous goal that “I will go overseas!:D:D:D”
